Keep each collector-area label attached to its number

A solar hot-water quotation can describe a collector using more than one area. A homeowner comparing only the numbers may think two documents contradict each other when they use different labels. Ask the provider to preserve the exact area description and product reference before using the figures in a purchase comparison.

Vaillant's auroTHERM classic VFK 135/2 product page lists an aperture collector surface area of 2.35 square metres and a gross collector surface area of 2.51 square metres for its identified VFK 135/2 VD entry. The page also lists overall dimensions separately. Those are manufacturer fields for that product entry, not confirmation of Cyprus availability or the roof space required for a proposed installation.

Use a qualified provider to assess the actual property and system. This guide explains document reconciliation. It does not size a solar hot-water system, interpret efficiency coefficients or supply mounting, fluid or plumbing instructions.

Identify the product before copying the measurement

Record the exact product name and variant shown in the proposal. Keep its datasheet or manufacturer-page reference and the date the information was checked. A similar family name does not establish the same dimensions or technical data for every version.

Ask the supplier to identify which area it means when the quotation says only "collector area". It can refer to the relevant manufacturer's field in the revised proposal. The owner should not silently choose the larger or smaller number to make two offers look comparable.

Keep quantity as a separate field. One collector's stated area and the sum for a group answer different questions. If the proposal shows a total, request the count and per-collector basis that produce it. The arithmetic should be traceable without implying that the total defines the whole system's performance.

Reconcile a fictional two-collector worksheet

The worksheet below illustrates arithmetic using the two labelled areas on the cited product page. The proposed quantity of two is fictional and is not a recommendation for any household.

Worksheet fieldNumber usedFictional quantityArithmetic totalLabel to preserve
A12.35 square metres2 collectors4.70 square metresSum of stated aperture areas
G12.51 square metres2 collectors5.02 square metresSum of stated gross areas
Q1 cover page5 square metresQuantity not identifiedCannot independently reconcileAsk supplier which field it rounded
R1 roof sketchSpace not assessed in this worksheetNot applicableNo conclusionProfessional layout assessment required

Two multiplied by 2.35 gives 4.70. Two multiplied by 2.51 gives 5.02. The difference between these totals is 0.32 square metres. That arithmetic does not establish a mounting clearance, roof envelope or performance advantage. It simply shows why the label must travel with the number.

Q1's rounded five-square-metre description needs clarification. The provider might confirm that it refers to G1, or it might identify a different proposed product. The owner should get the actual answer rather than assume the familiar round number closes the discrepancy.

Keep the roof-space question separate

R1 cannot be completed by copying G1 into a roof plan. Ask the qualified professional what assessment and layout documents its service includes. It must consider the actual property and proposed installation through its professional process. A sum of product areas is not a complete installation footprint.

If the owner has a roof photograph, identify its date and purpose when supplying it. It is an input for the provider, not an assessed plan. The owner should not climb onto the roof or measure around installed equipment to resolve a quotation field.

Ask the provider to explain how the accepted proposal identifies the physical arrangement and any separate property work. Keep that information with the relevant professional documents. It should not be hidden inside an unexplained "area" heading on a price sheet.

Compare documents using the same basis

Suppose offer B names another collector and lists a different area. Request B's own model-specific source and the exact field being used. Do not apply the cited Vaillant values to B or assume two nominally similar products share the same measurements.

Place gross totals beside gross totals only when the provider confirms what each document describes. Keep aperture totals in their own comparison field. Any assessment of output or suitability belongs in the relevant professional service, using the actual products and property.

The owner can also ask the supplier to distinguish solar-thermal heat from photovoltaic electricity in its proposal. The product in this example is a solar hot-water collector. Its area figures should not be turned into a PV panel watt rating by an unsupported calculation.

Ask what the offered system includes

The collector is only the item used in this measurement example. Request the complete equipment and service schedule for the proposed hot-water system. Ask the provider to identify what it will supply, what existing equipment it plans to retain and what requires a separate assessment or offer.

Obtain the applicable charges, VAT treatment, handover documents and the process for approving changes. A collector-only product offer and an assessed installation service can have different scopes. A matching area total does not make those offers equivalent.

Solarpanel is a starting point for a solar hot-water enquiry with the labelled worksheet and actual product references. A distinct roof or property-service question can be explored through Building, with the actual provider assessing and accepting its own scope. These links do not establish product availability or the suitability of a roof arrangement.

Preserve the clarification in the accepted proposal

When the supplier answers Q1, request a current proposal that identifies its quantity and area basis. If it changes the product or count, keep the revised equipment schedule and the relevant professional response. Do not correct only the owner's spreadsheet while leaving the supplier's accepted document ambiguous.

The fictional worksheet's final record can retain both 4.70 square metres of stated aperture area and 5.02 square metres of stated gross area for the illustrative count. R1 remains a separate professional question. Clear labels make the comparison usable while preventing a product-area calculation from pretending to be a complete system design.
