A net zero can hide two real energy flows

A home-solar app showing zero net grid energy does not necessarily say the household imported no electricity. It may show the difference between energy imported and energy exported over the selected period. Before using that number in a service enquiry, find out which quantity the screen displays and keep the two underlying totals separate.

Enphase's guide to grid imported and exported data, published 1 October 2026, describes net exported energy as exports minus imports, and net imported energy as imports minus exports. It says the relevant grid-energy view requires consumption monitoring equipment. These are statements about that documented monitoring view, not an explanation of a Cyprus utility bill or a claim that every installation supplies the data.

Ask the installer or manufacturer to identify the actual screen, equipment and measurement available for the household. This guide uses fictional arithmetic to explain the difference between a difference and its component totals. It does not diagnose a meter, calculate an electricity charge or establish a billing entitlement.

Write the unit, period and direction together

Before copying a number, record whether it is labelled imported, exported, net imported or net exported. Add the unit and the selected period. A number without those details is hard to interpret, particularly when two screenshots show different days or one screen uses a reversed direction convention.

Use the screen's own wording and ask the provider to explain it. Do not rename a field "generation" merely because it sits beside a solar graphic. Energy exported to the grid and total energy generated by the array answer different questions. The source of the displayed number belongs in the record too.

If the display does not provide both underlying totals, mark them as unavailable in the enquiry. The owner should not reconstruct missing imports or exports by guessing from a net total. A difference alone does not uniquely identify the two quantities that produced it.

Compare three fictional days

All values below are invented kWh totals for an illustrative period. They demonstrate the documented subtraction only. They are not expected yields, household targets or meter readings.

Fictional dayImported energyExported energyExports minus importsMeaning of that difference
D18 kWh8 kWh0 kWhEqual recorded totals, with both flows present
D25 kWh12 kWh7 kWhExports exceed imports by 7 kWh
D312 kWh5 kWhminus 7 kWhImports exceed exports by 7 kWh

D1 is the important trap. Eight minus eight equals zero, while the two fictional totals still record eight imported and eight exported. Calling that "no grid use" would erase the imported quantity. The owner should ask for the correct description before putting the number in a household report.

D2 and D3 also show why direction matters. Both contain a seven-kWh difference, but the larger flow is on the opposite side. A report that lists only "net seven" without a direction leaves the reader unable to distinguish them.

Do not add unlike periods

Suppose a saved screenshot shows D1's daily imports while another shows exports for the whole week. Subtracting them does not produce a meaningful daily difference. Match the selected period, site and documented quantity before comparing the figures.

In a fictional clarification pack, label the daily capture S1 and the weekly capture S2. Ask the provider for the corresponding period or an explanation of what it can supply. Keep S1 and S2 as context, but do not conceal the mismatch by copying both into a row labelled "Tuesday".

The same check applies to an incomplete period. A screen viewed during the day may show information only up to its reporting point. Record when it was captured and what period it claims to cover. Ask the provider how the actual platform handles updates rather than assuming that a live view is a final daily record.

Separate a monitoring question from a billing question

A monitoring record and a utility statement can use different sources, periods and rules. This article does not establish how the household's supplier settles imports or exports. Keep the actual bill and the applicable supplier information for that separate enquiry.

For the fictional case, the owner can ask the monitoring provider why D1 shows a net zero while retaining the eight-kWh import field. If it also wants a bill explained, it should supply the actual billed period and charges to the appropriate adviser or supplier. Do not multiply the fictional seven-kWh difference by an assumed rate to invent a saving.

Where a business owns the property, an accountant may need records for a separate accounting task. Agree which original documents it wants. An app screenshot is not automatically a replacement for the supplier's invoice or other accounting evidence.

Commission a clear explanation

Ask the service provider to identify the displayed fields and explain one selected, documented period. State whether the task is a remote explanation, a report or an assessed visit. Request the fee basis, VAT treatment and deliverable. A short explanation of a screen is different from professional testing of installed metering.

Solarpanel is a starting point for a household-solar enquiry using the labelled captures and questions. Comparison is relevant when comparing the scopes of proposed services. Confirm what each actual provider offers; these links do not verify meter accuracy or interpret the household's energy contract.

If the provider identifies an installation or measurement question, ask it to propose the appropriate professional assessment. The owner should keep the original observations and leave technical diagnosis to the qualified person. No subtraction in this guide authorises changes to electrical equipment.

Keep the answer with the original totals

When the provider replies, retain its explanation beside the source captures, their period and their direction labels. Correct the household summary if it had called D1 "no grid use". Preserve the eight-kWh import and export figures as separate fields rather than replacing them with the zero difference.

The final lesson survives the software brand. A net value answers a question about a difference. It does not, by itself, disclose every underlying flow. A useful household record keeps the named quantities, period and evidence available so a later service enquiry starts with a clear question rather than an ambiguous zero.
