Why the electrician matters as much as the panels

Solar marketing is about panels: their appearance, their technology, their warranty. But a solar system is, before anything else, an electrical installation — one that generates power on your roof, feeds it through your home and pushes it out to the public grid. The part of the job that determines whether the system is safe, legal and connectable is not the mounting of glass on a frame; it is the electrical work, and in Cyprus that work is regulated for good reason.

This page explains what the electrical side of a solar installation actually involves, what qualifications to look for, and the questions that separate a professional operation from a van with a ladder.

What the electrical work actually involves

It is worth walking through the job, because knowing the steps makes quotes and conversations far easier to judge.

The survey comes first

Before anything is priced properly, an electrician should look at your existing installation. Cypriot housing stock spans many decades, and the electrical capacity, condition of wiring and state of the consumer unit vary enormously. The survey establishes whether your incoming supply and consumer unit — the board of protective devices most people still call the fuse box — can accept a solar circuit, whether the earthing arrangement is up to current expectations, and where cables can run between roof and inverter without ugly or vulnerable routes.

A quote produced without anyone examining your consumer unit is a guess. The most common unpleasant surprise in residential solar is the consumer unit upgrade that "emerges" on installation day; a proper survey puts it in the written quote instead.

The DC side: from panels to inverter

The panels produce direct current — DC, current flowing steadily in one direction — and the cabling that carries it from the roof to the inverter is a speciality of its own. DC does not behave like the AC in your sockets: a poor connection arcs more readily and does not extinguish itself, which is why the quality of every crimped connector on the roof matters, and why mixing connector brands or crimping them with the wrong tool is the classic workmanship fault in solar. The DC side also needs its own isolation — a means of safely disconnecting the panels, which after all cannot be switched off while the sun shines — and correctly routed, UV-rated cable that will not chafe or perish on a hot roof.

The AC side: inverter, protection and the consumer unit

The inverter converts DC into alternating current and feeds it into your home through a dedicated circuit with its own protective devices in the consumer unit. The electrician sizes this circuit, fits the protection, and integrates it so that the solar system and your existing installation behave safely together — including under fault conditions, which is what earthing and protective devices exist for. Where the survey found the consumer unit full, obsolete or in poor condition, this is the stage where the upgrade happens.

Modern inverters also carry grid-protection settings — the behaviour that makes them disconnect automatically when the grid goes down or drifts out of its normal range. These settings must match what the grid operator requires, and configuring them is part of the electrician's job, not an optional extra. It is also why a grid-tied system shuts down in a power cut: it must never energise a line that utility workers believe is dead.

Testing, certification and connection

When the physical work is done, the installation is tested — insulation, earthing, polarity, the operation of every protective device — and certified by the licensed electrician. That certification is not bureaucratic decoration: it is the document that tells the grid operator, your insurer and any future buyer of the house that the work was done by a qualified person to the required standard. The connection application to the grid operator proceeds on the basis of it, and only once approval and metering are in place does the system begin operating and exporting legitimately.

Keep everything: the certificate, the application paperwork, the inverter settings record, the as-built details of what was installed where. A folder of solar documents costs nothing to keep and answers questions for decades. If you ever sell the house, that folder is what lets a buyer's surveyor tick the solar system off in minutes rather than raising it as a query; if a component fails under warranty, it is what proves when the system was commissioned and by whom. Ask for digital copies as well as paper — paperwork left in a drawer by a previous owner is one of the most common gaps electricians encounter when called to an unfamiliar system.

Licensing: what to check and how

Electrical work in Cyprus is a licensed trade, with classes of licence corresponding to classes of work. What you, as a householder, need to establish is straightforward: that the person certifying your installation holds a current licence appropriate to this work, and that the licence belongs to someone actually involved in your job rather than framed on an office wall while unlicensed crews do the work.

So ask directly. Ask to see the licence. Ask who will physically carry out and who will certify the electrical work on your installation — solar firms commonly subcontract, which is legitimate, but you are entitled to know whose qualifications stand behind your certificate. Where the subcontractor is named and you want to check them independently, the directory listing for electrical companies records the registrations each firm could document. Ask whether the firm carries insurance covering the work. None of these questions offends a professional; all of them fluster a cowboy, which is rather the point.

Be cautious of any offer to connect a system informally, to "sort the paperwork later", or to run the system before approval comes through. An uncertified or unapproved installation is not a shortcut — it is a system the grid operator can refuse to connect, an insurance claim waiting to be denied, and a problem attached to your house when you come to sell it.

Safety, done once and done properly

It bears repeating that solar is a safe technology with an excellent record — when installed competently. The faults that cause real incidents trace back, almost without exception, to workmanship: connectors crimped badly or mismatched between brands, cable runs that chafe through their insulation over years of rooftop heat and movement, protection devices omitted to save money, earthing done carelessly. Every one of those is invisible when the installers drive away and the app shows generation. Every one of them is precisely what licensing, certification and periodic inspection exist to prevent.

This is also the honest answer to the perennial question of whether a handy householder can do part of the job themselves. Mounting rails, lifting panels, running conduit — physically, plenty of people could. But the installation that results must be certified by a licensed electrician who takes responsibility for it, and no serious professional certifies work they did not control. The saving is small and the arrangement satisfies nobody, least of all your insurer.

Beyond installation: the electrician you keep

The relationship should not end at commissioning. Electrical components age — terminations loosen with years of thermal cycling, protection devices deserve periodic testing, and the inverter will eventually need replacing by someone qualified to do it. When you later add to the system — a battery, a car charger, more panels — each addition is electrical work touching the same consumer unit and the same certificates.

There is real value in continuity: an electrician who knows your installation, holds its history and did the original work diagnoses a fault in a fraction of the time a stranger needs. When choosing between quotes, the firm that talks about service visits, documentation and being reachable in three years' time is telling you something the cheapest bidder is not.

Choosing well: a short checklist

Bring it together and the decision becomes manageable. Favour firms that surveyed your consumer unit before quoting; that named the licensed electrician responsible for certification; that itemised the electrical scope — DC cabling and isolation, AC circuit and protection, any consumer unit work, earthing, testing and certification — in the written quote; that handle the grid operator's application as part of the job; and that answer questions about insurance and warranty without hedging. Then weigh price. An electrician's work is the part of a solar system you cannot see from the garden, and it is the part that everything else stands on.

Common questions

Do I need a licensed electrician to install solar panels?
Yes. Mounting panels on a roof is construction work, but connecting them to your home and to the grid is regulated electrical work that must be carried out and certified by an appropriately licensed electrician. The grid operator will not connect an uncertified installation, and your home insurance may not cover damage traced to unqualified electrical work.
Will my fuse box need upgrading for solar?
Often, yes. The consumer unit — the modern fuse box — needs space and capacity for the solar circuit and its dedicated protection devices, and older Cypriot installations frequently lack both. The electrician should assess it during the survey, before quoting, so any upgrade appears in the written price rather than surfacing as an extra on installation day.
What electrical checks happen before solar is connected?
The electrician tests the new circuits, verifies the earthing and protection devices, confirms the inverter's settings match what the grid operator requires, and certifies the installation. That certification accompanies the connection paperwork submitted to the grid operator, and the system may only begin exporting once approval and metering are in place. Keep copies of every document.
Can solar panels cause electrical fires?
Properly designed and installed systems are safe, and fires are rare. The risks that do exist come almost entirely from poor workmanship — badly crimped connectors, undersized cable, missing protection devices — and from neglect of ageing components. This is precisely why licensed installation, quality connectors and periodic inspection matter more than any brand of panel.
What questions should I ask a solar electrician?
