What maintenance a solar system genuinely needs

A solar array has no moving parts, which is why it is often sold as maintenance-free. That is nearly true, and the "nearly" is what this page is about. In Cyprus, two forces work steadily against your system: dust settling on the glass, and heat wearing at the electronics. Neither will destroy anything overnight. Both, ignored for years, will quietly cost you a meaningful slice of the output you paid for.

The good news is that sensible maintenance is neither frequent nor complicated. It amounts to keeping the panels reasonably clean, keeping an occasional eye on the monitoring, and having the system professionally inspected at sensible intervals so small problems are caught while they are still small.

Dust: the Cypriot constant

Cyprus sits in the path of dust carried up from the deserts to the south, and its summers are long and dry. Elsewhere in Europe, rain does most of a solar owner's cleaning; in Cyprus, weeks can pass without a drop, while dust events deposit a fresh film on every outdoor surface. That film scatters and blocks light before it ever reaches the solar cells, and output falls in proportion to how dirty the glass is.

The loss creeps rather than jumps, which is why it goes unnoticed. Day to day the numbers look normal; compared with a clean system on the same sunny week, the difference is real. Panels mounted at a shallow tilt hold dirt more stubbornly than steeply pitched ones, because rain and gravity help less, and the lower edge of a panel often develops a stubborn strip of grime where water pools and evaporates.

Cleaning without causing damage

The rules are short. Use water — plain, or demineralised if your supply is very hard, since hard water dries into mineral spots that are themselves a film. Use soft tools: a soft brush, a squeegee, a microfibre head on a pole. Avoid detergents, solvents and anything abrasive, all of which can damage the anti-reflective coating on the glass. Never use a pressure washer, which can force water past seals and stress the glass. And clean when the panels are cool — early morning is ideal — because cold water hitting sun-baked glass can crack it through thermal shock.

Then there is the question of whether you should be up there at all. A single-storey flat roof with a parapet is one thing; a pitched tiled roof two storeys up is quite another. Falls are the one genuinely serious risk in all of solar ownership, and professional cleaners come with the access equipment, insurance and water-fed poles that make the job routine. If your roof is not trivially safe to walk, the decision makes itself.

The inverter: the component that wears

The panels on your roof will very probably outlast everything else in the system. The inverter will not. It is the box that converts the panels' direct current into the alternating current your home and the grid use, it works every daylight hour, and it is packed with electronics that age faster the hotter they run. In a Cypriot summer, that is a demanding life, and it is realistic to expect at least one inverter replacement during the lifetime of the array.

You can slow the ageing considerably with siting and airflow. An inverter mounted on a shaded north-facing wall, in a garage, or in any ventilated indoor space lives an easier life than one bolted to a sun-struck exterior wall. If yours is already installed in a hot spot, keeping its surroundings clear so air can circulate — and cleaning dust from its vents or fans during service visits — is the next best thing.

Inverters usually signal trouble before they fail. Repeated shutdowns and restarts on hot afternoons, error codes in the app, a cooling fan that has become loud or gone silent, or output that sags below what the sunshine justifies are all worth a service call. An inverter limping along in a derated state can cost you months of reduced generation before it fails outright — catching it early is worth real money.

Monitoring: your free early-warning system

Almost every modern system ships with monitoring, and it is the most underused maintenance tool in solar. You do not need to study it daily. A glance every few weeks, and a habit of comparing like with like, is enough.

The useful comparison is never yesterday against today — clouds see to that — but this month's sunny days against sunny days in previous months, allowing for the season. A gradual slide that tracks the dust season points to dirty panels. A sudden step down that persists through good weather points to a fault: a tripped protection device, a failed component, an inverter problem. A system producing nothing on a sunny day is an immediate phone call.

If your system reports at panel level — some do, depending on the electronics installed — one panel underperforming its neighbours is a strong clue worth passing to your service company, because it localises the fault before anyone climbs a ladder. Keep occasional screenshots or exports; a record of normal behaviour makes abnormal behaviour obvious, and supports any warranty claim later.

What a professional inspection covers

Between cleanings, a periodic professional inspection is the layer of maintenance you cannot do from the ground. A competent technician will check the mounting and roof fixings for movement and corrosion — worthwhile on any coastal property, where salt air accelerates both — and confirm that the waterproofing at every roof penetration is intact. They will inspect cabling for UV-perished insulation and for chafing where wires cross edges, and check that connectors between panels are sound, because a degraded connector is one of the few faults in a solar system that can become a safety issue rather than merely a performance one.

On the electrical side, the inspection covers the inverter's condition and error logs, the tightness of terminations — connections loosen over years of daily thermal cycling — and the protection devices that disconnect the system when something goes wrong. Ask for a written report afterwards. A dated report with findings and photographs is worth keeping with your system documents: it is evidence for warranty claims, useful history for the next technician, and an honest record of how the system is ageing.

After extreme weather — a violent storm, exceptional winds, a hailstorm — bring an inspection forward rather than waiting for the scheduled one. Mounting and glass damage from a single event is exactly what routine intervals miss.

Warranties, and not accidentally voiding them

Maintenance and warranties are entangled in two ways worth understanding.

First, care requirements. Product warranties from panel and inverter manufacturers generally assume the equipment is treated reasonably. Damage from improper cleaning — pressure washing, abrasives, harsh chemicals — can give a manufacturer grounds to refuse a claim. When you hire cleaning or maintenance, use people who work to the manufacturers' care guidelines and will say so in writing.

Second, evidence. When something does fail, the difference between a smooth claim and an argument is often documentation. Monitoring history showing the fault's onset, service reports showing the system was properly cared for, and invoices establishing dates make a claim hard to dispute. Remember also the distinction that runs through everything on this site: the manufacturer's product warranty covers the equipment, while the installer's workmanship warranty covers the installation itself. A fault traced to mounting or wiring goes to the installer; keep both sets of paperwork alive.

Choosing a maintenance provider

Not every company that installs solar is equally interested in maintaining it, and some maintenance outfits never install at all. What matters is that the people touching your system are qualified for the electrical side — this is live equipment on a roof, not gardening — and insured for working at height.

Ask a prospective provider what their service visit actually includes, whether you receive a written report, whether they will service a system they did not install, and how they handle warranty liaison with manufacturers when a component fails. Clear answers to those four questions tell you most of what you need. As with installation quotes, the cheapest visit that includes nothing in particular is not the bargain it appears. The electrical side of the system is the part where qualification is a licence rather than an opinion, and a provider who is vague about who holds it has answered the question.

How often should solar panels be cleaned in Cyprus?
More often than in most of Europe, because Cyprus has long dry summers and regular dust episodes, and rain cannot be relied on to rinse the panels clean. Many owners clean after the spring dust season and again before the peak summer months, then judge by eye and by the monitoring data. A visible film on the glass means you are losing output.
Can I clean my solar panels myself?
