Most of what people want to know about solar in Cyprus comes down to four numbers: what it costs installed, what it generates, what the exported units are worth, and what breaks. Everything else is a variation on those. Below are the questions that come up most often, short answers to each, and — more usefully — the handful of things that decide whether the short answer applies to your roof or not.
The ten questions that come up most
Roughly in the order they tend to arise, from the first look at a quote through to what happens once the system is running and something stops working:
- What does a system actually cost, installed?
- How long before it pays for itself?
- Should I fit 3 kW, 5 kW or 10 kW?
- What does net metering actually credit me?
- What approvals are needed before anything goes on the roof?
- What breaks first, and what does a repair involve?
- Is my roof suitable?
- Do I need a battery?
- Does the summer heat cut output?
- Who is allowed to work on the system?
Short answers
1. Cost. Systems are priced per kilowatt-peak — kWp, the rated output of the panel array under standard test conditions — and installed residential work generally falls between €900 and €1,300 per kWp before any grant. The spread inside that comes from inverter choice, roof type, cable runs and scaffolding, not from the panels.
2. Payback. Six to nine years is the usual outcome for a residential system on net metering. Daytime occupancy shortens it, an empty house lengthens it, and shading lengthens it more than most quotes admit.
3. Sizing. Each installed kWp returns roughly 1,500 to 1,700 kWh a year in Cyprus, so a 5 kWp array lands around 7,500 to 8,500 kWh. The mistake is sizing to your annual bill. Size to your daytime baseline load instead — the units you will consume as they are generated are worth more than the ones you export.
4. Net metering. Exported units are credited at less than the retail rate you avoid by using your own generation. That single asymmetry is why two identical systems pay back years apart.
5. Approvals. Grid-connected work runs through an application to the electricity authority, which covers metering and the connection itself; grant applications run separately through the ministry's scheme. A competent installer handles both, but ask to see the submissions rather than taking it on trust.
6. Repairs. The inverter is normally the first thing to fail — it is the component with electronics, heat and a duty cycle. Panels themselves rarely fail; their mountings, connectors and cables do. The recurring repair calls are a tripped DC isolator, a degraded MC4 connector, a corroded clamp and an inverter fault code.
7. Roof. Flat concrete roofs take ballasted or bolted frames and are the common Cypriot case. Tiled pitches need proper hooks rather than anything driven through the covering. Any roof needs its waterproofing sorted before the array goes on, not after.
8. Battery. Under net metering, storage is a comfort and resilience decision more than an economic one, because the grid is already acting as your store. It changes if your export is limited or your supply is unreliable.
9. Heat. Yes. Module output falls as cell temperature rises, which is why a hot July afternoon can produce less than a clear day in April despite longer daylight. Well-ventilated mounting with a gap under the panels matters here more than it does in northern Europe.
10. Competence. Anything on the DC side, the isolator or the inverter is electrical work for a registered professional. Washing panels is not.
Where the answer depends
Four things move the answers above further than any product choice.
When the house is occupied. A household running air conditioning through the afternoon consumes its own generation at full retail value. A house empty from eight until seven exports most of it. Same roof, same panels, materially different return.
Shading, not orientation. Cyprus has enough sun that a modest deviation from due south costs little. A water tank, a chimney or a neighbouring block shading one panel for two hours costs a great deal on a basic string inverter, because the string follows its weakest module.
The connection you already have. Single-phase and three-phase supplies impose different limits, and the local feeder matters too — dense tourist-area connections around Germasogeia mean export applications there often require a load assessment before approval. That is a timeline question as much as a technical one.
Where the property sits. Coastal sites need marine-grade fixings and more frequent inspection of clamps and rails. Inland Nicosia has the widest temperature range on the island, which pushes both the summer derating and the winter yield further from the average than a coastal roof sees.
What nobody asks but should
Is the roof watertight first? Waterproofing failure is a recurring defect in Cypriot flat-roof construction, and an array sitting on top of it turns a straightforward repair into a strip-out and refit. If the roof membrane is near the end of its life, redo it before the panels, not four years later.
Will the installer still exist in year eight? Inverter warranties and workmanship warranties are only worth the company behind them. The Registrar of Companies will tell you how long the entity has been filing. Ask who services the inverter brand locally, independently of who fits it.
Who owns the roof? In an apartment block the roof is usually common property. That means a management committee decision, and it is far easier to get before the equipment is ordered.
What does the monitoring actually show? System-level monitoring tells you output has dropped. String-level or module-level tells you where. The difference becomes obvious the first time you have a fault, and the extra cost at installation is small compared with the diagnostic visit it saves.
What happens when you sell? The connection agreement and the metering arrangement sit with the account holder, and transferring them is part of the conveyancing rather than an afterthought. Raise it with your lawyer early.

Common questions
My generation has dropped. Is it the panels or the inverter?
Check the inverter display or app first — a fault code, a missing string or a unit that has stopped exporting entirely points at the electronics or the DC side. A gradual fall over months with no error is usually soiling, shading from something that grew, or a single underperforming string.
How long does an inverter replacement take?
The physical swap is a short job. The wait is the part that varies: stock of that model or a compatible replacement, and whether the grid connection paperwork needs updating because the specification has changed. Ask both questions when you get the quote.
Can any electrician work on a photovoltaic system?
Not appropriately. DC circuits behave differently from mains AC — they do not have a natural zero crossing, so a fault does not clear itself the way an AC one might. Use someone who works on PV specifically and is registered for it.
Does a repair affect my net metering arrangement?
A like-for-like repair normally does not. Changing the inverter rating or the array size can, because the approved capacity is part of the connection. Confirm before the work rather than after the meter reading looks wrong.
Is a ten-year-old inverter worth repairing?
Sometimes, if the fault is a fan, a surge protection device or a connector. If the power stage has failed and the model is out of support, replacement is usually the better spend — and it is a natural moment to reconsider whether string-level monitoring is worth adding.
