Solar electricians in Nicosia — costs and local companies

A solar electrician's work in Nicosia reaches you in one of two shapes, and the price behaves differently in each. Inside a full installation quote it is a component of the whole-system figure, which runs around €900–1,300 per installed kWp for a grid-tied residential array. As a standalone job — fault finding, an inverter swap, adding a battery or a charger, reconnecting after roof work — it is priced by the visit or the day plus materials, and the district ranges are in the table below. What moves either number most in Nicosia is the age and state of the consumer unit the system connects into.

The Nicosia market

Two features of the district set the electrical work apart from the coast. The first is building stock. Strovolos and the older inner suburbs hold a large stock of apartment blocks built between the 1970s and the 1990s, where rewiring already dominates renovation work. A board of that age frequently has no spare ways, no protective arrangement a new solar circuit can sit behind, and earthing that was adequate when installed but is not what a modern certification expects. The array does not cause any of that. It exposes it, and it has to be resolved before anything can be energised.

The second is that Nicosia has no seasonal shutdown. In the resort towns of the Famagusta district the practical window for roof work is November to March, because the rooms are occupied the rest of the year. Here availability is fairly even, with the predictable exception that everyone with air conditioning finds their electrical problems in the same fortnight in July.

Who you are buying from splits three ways: PV installers with an in-house certified electrician, independent electrical contractors who take solar work alongside domestic rewiring, and one-person operations working mainly as subcontractors. None is inherently better. What matters is which named, registered person tests and signs the installation.

What it costs here versus the national range

Both tables are read from our records at page load rather than typed into this article. Nicosia carries no meaningful district premium — materials come through the same importers island-wide, and travel inside the district is short compared with working out to Polis Chrysochous from a Paphos base. A quote worth comparing separates three pieces of work, because a single total tells you nothing.

The AC side runs from the inverter to your consumer unit: a dedicated way in the board, an AC isolator, the correct protective device, and on most Nicosia retrofits some attention to the board itself first.

The DC side is everything above the inverter: string cabling, DC isolation at the array and at the inverter, containment so cable is not lying on hot concrete, and earthing and bonding of the rails and frames.

The certification and connection piece is testing, written results, the installation certificate and the grid connection documentation. Work on a grid-connected installation has to be carried out and certified by a registered electrical contractor, and a system that is physically finished but uncertified is one you cannot run.

Local conditions that change the job

Board age is the dominant variable. In the 1970s to 1990s blocks of Strovolos and the inner suburbs, the realistic sequence is: assess the board, replace or extend it if it cannot take the circuit, then fit the solar side. An unusually low quote here is almost always one that assumed the board was fine.

Supply phase changes the specification. Single-phase is the norm in older Cypriot housing. Three-phase changes the inverter, the protection, the cable sizing and the test schedule, which is why two visually similar houses produce quotes nowhere near each other. Establish which you have before comparing anything.

Cable route is decided by the building, not the electrician. In a detached house with the board in the garage and the array on the far side of the roof, the run is long and needs protecting. In a block it goes down a light well or up an external wall, and whether it can be chased into plaster or has to run in surface trunking changes both the labour and how the finished job looks. Agree the route and the finish before work starts.

Heat is a real derating factor inland. Nicosia has the widest temperature range on the island, and an inverter mounted on a south-facing external wall in August throttles its output to protect itself. Ask where the inverter is going and what ventilation it has: a shaded, ventilated position costs nothing extra at installation and returns generation every summer.

Access inside the walls. In the old city, street width limits vehicle size, so materials are hand-carried up stairwells. That is time, and it belongs in the written quote rather than on the invoice.

Then ask for the price split into AC work, DC work and certification; who signs the certificate and their registration details; what test results you receive at handover; named materials rather than "solar cable and fittings"; payment stages tied to completed work rather than to dates; and what the labour warranty covers separately from the product warranty. Town by town

Strovolos and the surrounding inner suburbs are apartment-block territory. Expect the board to be the first item of work and the roof to be common property, which means committee consent, an agreed riser route and coordination time on top of the electrical work itself.

Nicosia centre splits between the old city, where access and hand-carrying drive the labour, and newer commercial blocks, where three-phase supplies are more common and the test schedule is longer.

Lakatamia, Latsia, Aglantzia and Engomi hold a mix of blocks and detached housing. In a detached property one household controls the whole roof and the board, which removes the coordination cost entirely — usually the difference between a job measured in days and one measured in weeks of waiting.

Geri, Tseri, Dali and Kokkinotrimithia are largely lower-rise and owner-occupied. The variable is roof type: a pitched tile roof needs edge protection and fixings that reach the rafters, which is a different day's work from a flat concrete roof with a parapet. On the outlying plots, a single full day usually costs less than two half-day visits a fortnight apart.

Common questions

Do I need a separate electrician if my installer already has one?

Not if the installer's electrician tests and certifies the work and gives you the written results. You are entitled to know who that person is, see their registration, and receive the certificate. If the installer cannot name them, that is your answer.

What is usually left out of a solar electrical quote in Nicosia?

Consumer unit replacement, making good after chasing, access equipment, the roof penetration and its waterproofing — which is roofing work, not electrical — grid application and metering fees, which are pass-through costs, and any remedial work found on test, such as a missing earth electrode or absent main bonding.

How long before the system can actually be switched on?

The electrical work is usually days. The connection and export-metering application to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus typically runs to around 45 days and has to be in before commissioning. Plan from that date backwards rather than from the contractor's diary.

Can I add a battery or an EV charger later without paying twice?

Partly. Board space, cable route and isolation can be prepared cheaply while the electrician is already on site. The battery or charger itself, its protection and its commissioning cannot. Preparing for it is worth doing even if the answer is "in three years"; pre-buying the hardware is not.
