Solar electrical maintenance in Cyprus: what to check and how often

The electrical side of a Cyprus solar system needs its own schedule. What to check, how often, and which parts you should not touch yourself.

The panels on a Cyprus roof will almost certainly outlast the electrical parts bolted to them, and it is the electrical parts that need a schedule. Once a year somebody competent should look at the inverter, the DC isolator, the cable runs and the earthing, and read the generation figures against what the system did the previous year. Everything else — cleaning, a glance at the app, checking the mounting clamps have not moved — you can do yourself. Nothing on the direct current side of the system is a homeowner job, at any point, for reasons set out below.

Why the climate matters here

Cypriot conditions attack electrical equipment in three specific ways, and each one has a maintenance consequence.

Heat. A roof surface in July is far hotter than the air temperature, and an inverter mounted where it bakes will throttle its own output to protect itself. That is a siting fault, but it shows up as maintenance: the unit runs hotter each year as its cooling fins fill with dust and its fan bearings wear. Nicosia has the widest temperature range on the island, so both the summer derating and the winter thermal cycling are more severe inland than on the coast.

Salt and humidity. In Kato Paphos and the exposed coastal strip, salt-laden air is the reason galvanised and marine-grade fixings are standard there. The same air gets into cable glands, isolator enclosures and connector housings. Near Oroklini the salt lake raises humidity, which does the same job more slowly and more quietly. Corrosion on a DC connector is not visible from the ground and does not show on a monitoring app until it is already generating heat.

Ultraviolet. Cable ties, cable sheathing and enclosure seals fail from sun exposure. A perished tie drops a cable onto a hot roof surface; a perished seal lets water into an isolator. Both are cheap to fix and expensive to ignore.

The maintenance schedule

  1. Monthly — you, from the ground

    Compare this month's generation against the same month last year. A system in Cyprus produces roughly 1,500 to 1,700 kWh per installed kWp per year, so you should have a stable seasonal shape to compare against. A step change matters more than a slow drift.

  2. Twice a year — you, visually

    Look at the array from a safe vantage point. Panels sitting flat where they were tilted, a cable hanging where it was clipped, a stain running down a wall below an enclosure. Note it and book someone; do not go up to it.

  3. Annually — a registered electrical contractor

    The visual and connection check: inverter condition and error log, DC isolator operation, torque on the array frame earthing, connector and cable condition, enclosure seals, and a thermal look over the connections while the system is generating.

  4. At the interval your installer and inverter manufacturer specify

    The fuller electrical inspection, including insulation resistance testing and string performance measurement. This interval is set by the equipment and the installation, not by a rule of thumb, and it should be written into your handover documents. If it is not, ask for it.

  5. After any severe weather or seismic event

    Out of sequence, and worth doing. Wind uplift loosens clamps; hail and wind-borne debris crack cells in ways that only show as a string underperforming.

What you can do yourself

Reading the monitoring data is the highest-value thing on this list, and almost nobody does it. Most residential systems, which typically fall between 3 and 10 kWp, come with an app or a web portal. Once a month, look at it. A single string that has stopped reporting, or an inverter logging the same fault every afternoon, is worth a call now rather than a discovery at the next annual check.

Panel cleaning is the other homeowner job, and only where the array is safely reachable — a flat roof with a parapet, a ground mount. Cool water, a soft brush, early morning or evening. Cold water on hot glass is a genuine way to crack a panel, so never clean an array in the middle of the day. If reaching the array involves a ladder against a pitched roof, it is not a homeowner job any more, and on hillside plots in Peyia and similar villages, where steep access already limits what vehicles can get near the house, access equipment is the main thing you are paying for.

Keep the area around the inverter clear. Storage stacked against a wall-mounted inverter blocks its airflow, and that alone shortens its life.

What needs a professional

Everything on the DC side. The wiring between the panels and the inverter carries direct current at a voltage that does not switch off when you turn off the mains, and it is live whenever there is daylight on the array. A DC arc does not self-extinguish the way a mains arc does. This is why the annual check belongs to a registered electrical contractor and not to a general handyman with a multimeter.

Also professional-only: anything touching the metering arrangement. The meter and the connection agreement sit with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus, so a fault between your inverter and the meter is a compliance question, and the contractor coordinates it rather than you.

Cost of neglect

The expensive failures on a Cypriot solar installation are almost all the slow ones.

A corroded DC connector heats up, and heat accelerates corrosion. The system keeps working, generating slightly less each season, until the connector fails or starts a fire. A blocked inverter vent produces the same pattern: a unit that runs hot every summer and reaches the end of its service life several years earlier than an identical unit with clear airflow in the same installation. In both cases the loss is not the repair bill but the years of degraded output you were never told about, plus a replacement inverter you had not budgeted for.

Soiling is the reversible one, but it compounds with everything else. A dirty array on a system with one underperforming string looks, on the app, exactly like a dirty array. The cleaning gets done, the string fault does not.

The annual electrical check costs a fraction of one inverter replacement, and its value is catching the things that never announce themselves.

Common questions

How often does the inverter actually need replacing?

Plan for it once during the life of the panels rather than assuming it will not happen. Siting is the variable that moves it most — a shaded, ventilated, indoor or north-wall position buys years over a unit in direct sun on a south wall.

Is a maintenance contract worth it?

It depends on what is in it. A contract covering the annual check and logging the readings is worth having, because that record is what a warranty claim needs. A contract that is a cleaning visit with an invoice is not maintenance.

My generation has dropped but nothing shows a fault. What now?

Compare month against the same month a year earlier rather than against last month, then look at the strings separately if your inverter reports them. A single string down usually points to a connector or a shading change — a new tree, a new neighbouring building. Whole-system drop with no fault is more often soiling or a derating inverter.

Can the installer who fitted it do the annual check?

Usually yes, and there is an argument for it: they know the layout and hold the commissioning data. What matters is that whoever does it is registered for electrical installation work and leaves you a written record of the readings.

Does maintenance affect the warranty?

Frequently, yes. Inverter and panel manufacturers commonly require evidence of inspection, and the burden of proof is on you. Keep the reports.
