What a solar electrician actually does in Cyprus

What a solar electrician does on a Cyprus roof: the DC and AC work, what a quote covers as standard, what gets charged separately, and what to check first.

A solar electrician owns the electrical half of a photovoltaic system: everything from the modules on the roof, through the inverter, to the point where the system meets your consumer unit and the utility meter. On a new installation that work is normally bundled inside the installer's price and you never see it itemised. On an existing system — a fault, an upgrade, a house you have just bought with panels already on it — it is a separate job with its own scope, and that is where most of the confusion about what a quote covers begins.

Scope in plain terms

The work divides into three parts, and knowing which one your problem sits in tells you roughly what you are buying.

The DC side is everything before the inverter. Modules are wired in series into a string, the string runs down the roof in cable rated for ultraviolet exposure, and it terminates at a DC isolator — a switch that lets the array be disconnected. Strings run at several hundred volts DC and are live whenever daylight falls on the glass. There is no off switch on a solar panel.

The AC side starts at the inverter, which converts that DC into the 230 V single phase or 400 V three phase supply your house actually uses. It includes the AC isolator, a dedicated breaker in the board, the cable run back to the consumer unit, and the earthing and bonding that ties the mounting frame into the property's protective earth.

The paperwork is the part nobody photographs. A grid-connected system requires an application to the Electricity Authority of Cyprus and a meter change before it can be energised, and the electrical contractor is normally the one who prepares the technical side of that submission and coordinates the changeover.

Repair and maintenance visits use the same three-way split. Output has dropped is a DC-side question. The inverter trips at two in the afternoon is usually an AC-side or a heat question. The system was never registered properly is a paperwork question, and it is more common than you would expect on properties that changed hands.

What is included as standard

On a full installation, a quote from a registered electrical contractor should already cover the following without you asking:

  1. DC cabling, containment and isolation

    UV-rated cable in conduit or tray rather than draped over the roof, with an isolator at the array and another at the inverter, both labelled.

  2. Inverter mounting and commissioning

    Mounted somewhere it can shed heat, then configured for the grid settings that apply here — not left on the factory default for a different country.

  3. AC connection and protection

    A dedicated breaker, an AC isolator, and cable sized for the run length rather than for the inverter's nameplate alone.

  4. Earthing and bonding

    The frame and the module rails bonded back to the property's earth, which is also the first thing to corrode on a coastal roof.

  5. Testing and handover

    Insulation resistance, polarity, earth continuity, and a commissioning record you keep. If you cannot produce that record later, a warranty claim on the modules becomes much harder.

Rates for electrical work vary more by access and travel than by district reputation.

What is almost always extra

These items are legitimate additions rather than padding, but they should appear in the quote before the work starts rather than on the invoice afterwards.

  • Consumer unit replacement. A large share of the housing stock in areas like Strovolos is 1970s to 1990s apartment blocks still running their original distribution boards. A board with no spare ways and no residual current protection has to be replaced before a new circuit goes into it, and that is a separate job with its own isolation window.
  • Long AC runs. Detached villas where the roof array is a long way from the meter position, and plots where the cable has to be trenched to a garage or a pool plant room.
  • Access equipment. Scaffold, a tower, or roof edge protection. On the hillside plots around Peyia the steep access roads limit vehicle size, so what would be a straightforward lift elsewhere becomes a hand-carry with an extra pair of hands.
  • Export load assessment. In dense tourist-area networks such as Germasogeia, connection capacity on the local feeder is the constraint rather than your roof, and the application can require assessment work before it is approved.
  • Waterproofing reinstatement. Every roof penetration is a future leak if it is left to the electrician's silicone tube. On flat roofs with a membrane this is properly a waterproofing job.
  • Corrosion replacement. Connectors, clips and earthing hardware on exposed coastal roofs near Kato Paphos, where salt-laden air makes marine-grade fixings the default and eats anything that is not.
  • Out-of-hours attendance. An inverter that has stopped is not a burst pipe. Ask what the emergency rate is before you ask for a Sunday visit.

The parts people underestimate

Fault-finding is time, not parts. The component that fails is often inexpensive; the hour spent isolating which string, which connector or which module is carrying the fault is not. A quote that gives you a fixed price for a diagnosis you have not had yet is quoting a guess.

The array cannot be switched off. Work on the DC side happens at first light, or under a covered array, or with a documented isolation procedure. This is why a competent contractor sometimes refuses to start at two in the afternoon in July, and why anyone who offers to open a live junction box in full sun is telling you something useful about how they work.

Heat derates inverters. Inland around Nicosia, where the temperature range is the widest on the island, an inverter mounted on a west-facing external wall will throttle its output through exactly the hours you were counting on. Moving it into a ventilated garage or onto a shaded elevation costs a cable run and buys back generation every summer.

Absentee properties fail silently. In the holiday-let stock around Protaras, a tripped inverter can sit dead for weeks because nobody is there to notice the display. Remote monitoring is the cheap fix, and the winter months are when access is easiest anyway because the units are empty.

Inherited systems come without history. If the panels came with the house, assume nothing about who registered the system, what settings were used, or whether the earthing was ever tested. A one-off inspection before the first summer is worth more than the paperwork the previous owner may or may not hand over.

Common questions

Is a solar installer the same as a registered electrician?

Not automatically. Mounting rails and lifting panels is not electrical work; connecting to the consumer unit and to the meter is. Ask which registered contractor is doing the connection and whose registration the commissioning documents will carry. Can I get someone out on the same day?

Sometimes, and the answer depends more on where you are than on the fault. Contractors are concentrated around the main towns, so a call-out to Polis Chrysochous carries travel time that a call-out within Paphos does not. The area pages show who already works nearby.

The modules are under warranty, so who pays when output drops?

Module warranties cover the modules. Most output complaints turn out to be a connector, an isolator, a soiled array or an inverter setting, none of which the module manufacturer is responsible for. Diagnosis comes first, and the commissioning record from the original install is what makes the claim straightforward if it does turn out to be a module.

How often should the electrical side be checked?

There is no fixed interval that suits every roof. Coastal exposure, roof access and whether the property is occupied all move it. A reasonable pattern is an inspection in the first year, then tie it to the cleaning visit so one trip up the ladder does both.

Does adding a battery mean new electrical work?

Yes. Storage changes the AC side, usually needs a hybrid or additional inverter, and may change what has been agreed with the utility about export.
