What being inland changes about your quote

The Nicosia district has no coast. That single fact drives most of what makes a solar quote here different from one written for Limassol or Larnaca, and it cuts both ways.

The good half is that salt is not in the air. Coastal installers specify marine-grade fixings, stainless fasteners and corrosion allowances on frames because they have to; inland, that pressure is off, and an aluminium rail system with standard fixings is a reasonable specification rather than a corner cut.

The hard half is heat. Nicosia records the widest temperature range on the island, and the Idalion plain around Dali is severe in high summer. Photovoltaic modules lose output as they get hotter — every panel has a temperature coefficient on its datasheet saying by how much — and a module lying flat against a hot concrete roof with no air behind it runs hotter than one raised on a frame. So the mounting detail is not cosmetic here. Ask any installer quoting for a Nicosia roof how much clearance sits under the modules, and treat a vague answer as a reason to keep looking.

Shading is the other inland variable, and it is seasonal in a way that catches people out. Winter sun in Cyprus sits low. A parapet wall, a lift overrun, a neighbouring block or a water tank that casts nothing across the roof in June can put a stripe across a string in December, exactly when your output is already at its lowest. A survey done in summer, by eye, will miss it.

The roof you probably have

Two kinds of roof dominate this district, and they lead to different conversations.

Older Nicosia suburbs — Strovolos, Engomi, Aglantzia, parts of Lakatamia — are built out with apartment blocks from roughly the 1970s to the 1990s. These usually have flat concrete roofs, which is the easiest surface in the world to mount on. The complication is not technical. The roof of an apartment block is common property, and an individual flat owner cannot simply allocate a piece of it. That means a decision by the management committee, in writing, before an installer starts. Get that first. Installers in this district have watched signed jobs stall for months at exactly this step, and a deposit paid before the committee has agreed is a deposit at risk.

The commuter villages — Tseri, Geri, Dali, Kokkinotrimithia, Latsia — are dominated by detached houses, much of it recent construction. Roofs are newer, the owner is the decision maker, and the structural question is usually straightforward. Here the practical constraints are more often about where the inverter goes and how far the cable run is from roof to consumer unit.

What the work costs

The figures below are published cost levels for Cyprus, not quotes we have collected, and they are national rather than district-specific. Use them to judge whether a quote sits in a sane range, not as a substitute for getting one.

Two things move a residential quote more than anything else. The first is system size: cost per kWp falls as the system grows, because the survey, the scaffold, the electrical work and the grid application cost roughly the same whether you fit three kilowatts or ten. A small system will look expensive per kilowatt and still be the right system if your consumption is small. The second is what the price includes. A quote that stops at the roof is not comparable with one that carries the electrical work and the grid-connection application through to completion.

Checks worth making before you sign

Solar has both a construction side and a regulated electrical side, and the electrical side is where the risk sits. Connecting a generator to the grid is not general handywork. Ask who will do and certify the electrical work, and get the name.

Beyond that, four questions separate a comparable set of quotes from a pile of numbers:

1. Ask what happens to the grid application

   Every grid-tied system needs an application to the electricity authority. Find out whether the installer submits it, what they need from you, and what the quote assumes if the application comes back with conditions.

2. Ask for the datasheets, not the brand

   Module and inverter model numbers let you compare warranty terms and expected degradation. A brand name alone tells you very little.

3. Ask who returns if output drops

   Inverters fail more often than panels. Find out what the response looks like in year six, and whether the warranty is with the installer or only the manufacturer.

4. Ask about roof access in writing

   On an apartment block, confirm the committee decision is in hand. On a detached house, confirm whether scaffold or a lift is included or excluded.

Getting comparable quotes

The single most useful thing you can do is give every installer the same brief. Send the same roof photographs, the same recent electricity bills and the same statement of what you want the system to do. Quotes built on different assumptions cannot be compared, and the cheapest of three quotes for three different systems tells you nothing at all.

If a quote is materially lower than the others, the answer is usually in the scope rather than the margin. Look for the grid application, the electrical certification, the isolators and the cable run before assuming someone has simply sharpened their pencil.
