How to choose a solar water heater company in Cyprus

A solar water heater is a small job with two expensive ways to go wrong: a cylinder mounted on a roof that was never checked for the load, and a hot water connection made by someone who is not registered to certify the electrical side of it. Before you compare prices, get three things in writing — the entity that contracts with you and its HE number, who makes the plumbing and electrical connections, and the cylinder capacity in litres. Everything else in a quote is easier to fix later than those.

What can actually be verified

Solar water heating here is a crowded trade with a long tail of one-van operators, and the difference between them is invisible on a price list. Four things are checkable.

The company. Limited companies carry an HE number on the Registrar of Companies. Ask which name goes on the contract, and match it against the name on the bank details before you pay anything. A ten-year guarantee is worth exactly as much as the entity issuing it.

Who does the connections. A replacement system touches the cold feed, the hot distribution and — on almost every Cypriot installation — a backup immersion element on its own circuit. Ask for the name of the person making the electrical connection and the registration they work under. "Our team handles it" is not an answer.

Engineering sign-off where it applies. Beyond a like-for-like domestic replacement — a block, a commercial roof, a system feeding more than one dwelling — design responsibility sits with a professional registered with the Cyprus Scientific and Technical Chamber (ETEK). Ask for the name, not the logo.

The paperwork trail for the grant. The replacement scheme is paid on completion against invoices, so the invoice has to be in the right name, for the right work, from a registered entity. A company that cannot invoice properly cannot get you paid.

What you cannot verify: claimed years in business, "thousands of installations", and praise of unknown origin. Registrations that matter

A solar water heater touches fewer registers than a rooftop PV system, but the four below decide whether anyone is accountable when something leaks or trips.

1. Registrar of Companies

   Confirms the contracting entity exists and how long it has been trading. Check the HE number on the quote against the invoice and the bank details.

2. Electrical registration for the backup element

   Nearly every system installed here has an immersion element for the days the sun does not do the job. That element is a fixed electrical appliance on a protected circuit. Whoever wires it should be registered to certify it, and you should receive that certificate.

3. ETEK, where a design is required

   Multi-dwelling, commercial or non-standard installations need a registered professional behind the design. A single-family replacement on an existing roof usually does not, but ask rather than assume.

4. VAT and invoicing

   The grant is reimbursed against invoices. If the quote is a number in a message with no entity behind it, there is nothing to submit and nothing to enforce.

The scheme for replacing an electric water heater with a solar thermal system on an existing dwelling pays up to €450, on completion, against invoices — small enough that some companies never mention it, large enough to matter against an installed price with a median near €950.

Questions to ask

• What cylinder capacity, in litres? The standard residential configuration priced in Cyprus is a 150 to 200 litre thermosiphon system. Undersizing shows up as cold showers in February; oversizing shows up as a heavier tank on your roof and a longer reheat.
• What is the collector area, and how is it oriented? Ask what the collectors face and at what angle, and what on the roof will shade them in winter, when the sun is low and every parapet and stair enclosure throws a long shadow.
• Has anyone checked what the roof can carry? A 200 litre cylinder holds 200 kg of water before you add the tank, frame and collectors. On the 1970s–1990s apartment blocks that dominate Strovolos and much of Nicosia, that is a question for the building, not for the salesperson.
• Direct or indirect, and why? Inland, Nicosia has the widest temperature range on the island — hot enough in August to make scale a live issue and cold enough on winter nights to make frost protection worth specifying. Ask which the quote assumes.
• What fixings and what frame material? In Kato Paphos and along the coastal strip, salt-laden air is the reason galvanised and marine-grade fixings are standard. A cheap frame on a coastal roof is a rust problem with a date on it.
• What happens to the old system? Removal, disposal and making good the mounting points and any roof penetration should be named in the quote. On a flat concrete roof with a waterproofing membrane, whoever lifts the old frame owns the seal underneath it.
• How is the roof accessed? In a block, roof access may need the management committee's consent, and materials may have to go up a communal staircase. On hillside plots, vehicle access decides how much of the day is spent carrying.
• What is the warranty, split how? Cylinder, collectors, frame and workmanship carry different terms. Ask for each in years, on paper.
• Who comes back for a leak in year three, and how fast?

What a good quote looks like

Start from the installed price, not the tank price.

That range — roughly €700 to €1,400, median near €950 — covers a standard 150 to 200 litre thermosiphon system supplied and installed. A quote below it is worth reading twice: the usual omissions are removal of the old system, the electrical connection for the backup element, or a frame that will not survive coastal air.

A quote you can actually compare states:

• Cylinder capacity in litres, and whether it is single or twin coil.
• Collector type, quantity and total area.
• Frame and fixing material, with the coastal grade named where it applies.
• Backup element rating and who certifies its circuit.
• Pipework: material, insulation and the run length, since a long run across a hot roof loses more than people expect.
• Removal and disposal of the existing system, and making good.
• Valves and safety fittings — pressure relief, non-return, thermostatic mixing where fitted.
• Commissioning, pressure test and handover.
• Warranties, itemised in years by component.
• Grant handling: who prepares the invoice in the form the scheme requires.
• VAT treatment on the face of the quote.
• Payment stages tied to delivery and commissioning.

Warning signs

• A price quoted before anyone has seen the roof. Roof condition, existing mounting points, shading and access all move the number, and none of them are visible over the phone.
• No litre figure. If the quote says "solar water heater, supplied and fitted" and nothing else, you cannot compare it with anything.
• Cash only, or a deposit approaching the full price. On a job in this price range, a large upfront payment is the risk, not the discount.
• The old system left on the roof. It happens, and it is your problem after the van leaves.
• No mention of the electrical connection. The backup element is the part that turns a plumbing job into a job needing certification.
• Grant urgency. Scheme conditions are published by the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry. If someone tells you the money runs out this week, check before you sign.
• A guarantee with no entity behind it. A ten-year promise from a company registered eight months ago is a sentence, not a warranty.

Common questions

How much should a solar water heater cost installed?

Standard residential systems land between €700 and €1,400 installed, with a median around €950, for a 150 to 200 litre thermosiphon configuration. What moves you within that range is cylinder size, collector area, frame specification, whether an old system has to come off, and how hard the roof is to reach.

Do I need permission to replace one?

A like-for-like replacement on a house roof is normally straightforward. In an apartment block the roof is generally common property, so consent from the management committee comes first. Listed buildings and conservation areas carry additional requirements worth checking with the Department of Town Planning and Housing before you order.

Is a bigger cylinder always better?

No. A larger cylinder takes longer to bring up to temperature, weighs more on the roof and costs more to install. Size it to the number of people drawing hot water and when they draw it, then let the installer justify anything above that in writing.

Are online reviews a reliable way to choose?

They are unverifiable, and this site does not publish them. Company registration, the registration of whoever certifies the electrical connection, how long the entity has traded, and a quote itemised to component level tell you more than any star count.

Can I claim the grant if I already had the work done?

The replacement scheme is paid on completion against invoices, so the shape of the paperwork matters more than the timing of the tap. Read the current conditions on the Ministry's site before committing, because the eligibility terms are the part that changes between rounds.

Should the company be local to me?

Travel time is priced into call-out rates and shows most in the far corners of the island. The more useful question is what happens when a fitting weeps in year three: ask what the response arrangement is during the warranty period, and get the answer into the contract.
